Faye Tozer on her role in Mean Girls and the importance of ignoring the negative noise

Faye Tozer Mean Girls Interview

Faye Tozer stars as Regina George’s mum in Mean Girls

For singer and actress Faye Tozer, her career has spanned decades with exciting changes at every corner, but her latest role is one she never expected to come her way.

The Steps member is currently playing Regina George’s mum in the musical version of Mean Girls, but admitted that the role was a surprise.

She told Her.ie, “I didn’t see this one coming at all. It was so exciting to be asked, and I absolutely love this job. It’s one of my favourite jobs. It’s so fun and so ridiculous at the same time.”

It may have been a surprise for Tozer, but she belongs on the stage, and seeing her breathe new life into such an iconic role is incredible.

Playing Regina George’s mum has been nothing but “fun and ridiculous” for the former Strictly Come Dancing star.

Tozer said the best thing about this role is how brazen and self-assured her character is.

“She was going through her ‘queenager’ moment right then. Being able to join in with the girls is a wonderful feeling.”

Tozer added that she loves playing a character who is “at a stage where you don’t care so much.”

“And that’s exactly where I am as well. You don’t care about other people’s opinions. You’re living in your own best life bubble.”

Tozer shared that this is the first time she has been the oldest member of the cast, but she is learning so much from her co-stars.

“This is probably the first time I’ve been the oldest member in a cast, and that was quite a defining moment for me. Everyone calls me mumma mean girl. It’s really lovely because it means that they look after me as much as I look after them,” Tozer shared.

Tozer said the “energy and kindness” and the way the whole cast works together is something special.

“You can run away with what other people think of you”

Speaking about the importance of focusing on the positives in your life, Tozer said she has realised that life is too short to let someone’s opinion of you take over.

“You can run away with what other people think of you, but at the end of the day, we’re only here once. You’ve got to try and live your best life. People will always have an opinion. We’re in the entertainment industry, so we do put ourselves out there to a certain extent. I always say, if you’ve got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything, and I like to live by that a little bit.”

The actress stressed that we only get one chance on earth, so why should we spend it focusing on negative people and what they think of us?

“The energy you spend on negativity can be spent on being happy. So, it’s your choice.”

Tozer said she feels like being in musical theatre has been a “real gift” for her because it’s such a special world.

Mean Girls comes to Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from August 25th to September 5th, 2026. Find out more here.
