Adam Garcia and Sidonie Smith star in The Bodyguard
The Bodyguard has landed at Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, and it’s one of the most tense and thrilling shows we’ve had the joy of watching this year.
Starring Sidonie Smith as Rachel Marron and Adam Garcia as Frank Farmer, the show will have you dancing and sitting on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
Speaking to Her.ie about his role in the show, Australian actor Adam Garcia said there’s a certain magic in the production that has made it a hit with audiences.
Garcia plays the slick and honourable bodyguard Frank Farmer in the show and joked about wanting to be like the character he plays in The Bodyguard.
“Frank is resolute, loyal, and honourable. He’s kind of quiet and speaks when he needs to. He’s efficient, well-trained, and possibly slightly jaded, but he’s a good man. Am I anything like him? Not at all! I was speaking to my wife about this, and she was like ‘Now, if you could just be like Frank…’ The same thing happened when I did a show called If/Then, and she said ‘The guy you played was really lovely…’ so maybe it’ll wash off!”
“There’s a sort of fantasy element of a knight in shining armour.”
Speaking about the magic of the show, the Coyote Ugly star said audiences are so drawn to it because it’s a story about heroes and villains, and forbidden love.
“Because it’s about heroes and villains, and it’s about how these two people are drawn to one another, yet it’s forbidden love. There’s something about the need of these two people, and yet they’re not meant to have this, which is quite a beautiful story. I guess you can go into tropes, but there’s a sort of fantasy element of a knight in shining armour, or someone always there in the background to take care of you and your family. That’s got romantic overtones too.”
The dancer added, “I’m looking forward to delving into how Frank and Rachel contrast, why they get on, why they might not get on, and where the friction is, because that’s the exciting bit. You can’t just be like ‘Oh I love you, let’s go!’ because that’s never that interesting.”
Adam Garcia and Sidonie Smith dazzle in this tense and thrilling stage production of a movie that many of us hold dear to our hearts. It’s tense but glamorous and heaped with hits from the very opening number to the moment the cast takes their final bows.
You’ll be completely wrapped up in this production from the moment Adam Garcia walks out on stage for the first time. It’s full of those Whitney Houston classics that you’ll be singing for days after you leave the theatre, but more importantly, it stars a cast who have perfectly captured the 1992 movie and given it a new life on the stage.
The Bodyguard runs in The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from August 4th to August 8th. Book here.
